How to use Word Ladder Solver

  1. Enter a four-letter start word and end word, then choose Find ladder.
  2. Change exactly one letter at each step. Every word must be in this tool's word list.
  3. Enter your next word, or ask for a hint. The first hint identifies a letter position; the next reveals one possible word.
  4. Reveal a shortest solution when you want, undo a step, or choose another practice puzzle.

A little help along the way

  • Work backward from the target as well as forward from the start. Intermediate words do not need to share the target's meaning.
  • Changing a vowel can open a different family of words. There may be several equally short routes.
  • If another game rejects an intermediate word, add it to the exclusions and recalculate. Its dictionary may differ from this one.

Good questions

How does a word ladder solver work?

The solver treats words as connections. Two words connect when exactly one letter changes. It searches these connections to find a route with the fewest moves in the selected word list.

Can I use this for Poople hints?

Choose POOP as the target and enter your four-letter start word. You can request one hint at a time. This is an independent helper with its own word list, not an official Poople solver or historical answer feed. A word accepted here may be rejected there.

Why can a real word be missing?

The list is a four-letter subset of the ESDB US English spell-checker list. It excludes proper-name entries and a short list of vulgar terms. It is finite and includes some uncommon and inflected words; it is not a complete dictionary or any other game's accepted-word list.

What counts as one move?

Changing one letter in the same position counts as one move. COLD to CORD is one move. COLD to CARD changes two letters and needs an intermediate word. The start word itself is move zero.
